Staying Fit at Home

Due to the coronavirus, many people have fallen into an exercise slump. It can be hard to find motivation to get moving outside of the gym, especially when the couch is right there, but staying in shape is more important now than ever. Here are some easy exercises you can incorporate into your routine to get your blood flowing and stay fit while stuck indoors.

How to Start

Buy fitness equipment (if you are able)

The phrase “fitness equipment” sounds like a scary, expensive purchase, but it doesn’t have to be. If you can afford a treadmill or elliptical, great! If not, “fitness equipment” could mean a few dumbbells, resistance bands, or a yoga mat. They aren’t necessary, as you can easily just do body weight exercises, but they will help you diversify your workouts.

Designate a specific exercise area

While some people are lucky enough to have a spare room or even a home-gym, most people aren’t, but you can still find a specific place to exercise. Keep all your equipment in one place, so the area feels like an intentional workout space– whether it’s your living room or back patio.

Put exercise time into your schedule

Having a schedule is the best way to hold yourself accountable and actually exercise. Find a pocket in your day where you can easily fit in some exercise– whether it’s a 30 minute walk or an hour long cardio session–, and stick to that schedule.

Follow an exercise video

If you are the type of person who needs structure to get motivated, exercise videos are great for you. Luckily, there are hundreds of options to choose from designed for every age, gender, and goal. You could buy an exercise DVD and follow along with the program as you please. You could subscribe to an app and follow programs from trainers. For a completely free option, turn to YouTube!

Exercise games

In recent years, many consoles have developed games designed to get you moving– some even completely dedicated to exercise. If you have a gaming console, you can buy one of these games– whether it’s dance, yoga, or something else, these games can get you up and moving while not feeling like traditional exercise.

Body weight exercises

If you don’t have the funds to buy equipment or games, body weight exercises are perfect. There are so many options to help you build strength, endurance, and burn calories. Alternate between different exercises to keep your heart rate up and work different muscles. Here is a great way to start building your body weight workout.

  1. Choose your workout: cardio, strength training or a mixture of both.
  2. Choose several different exercises: for cardio, choose exercises with different levels of intensity. For strength training, choose things like squats, push ups, and dips. You will alternate between these.
  3. Choose the length of these exercise: decide how long you want them to be or how many reps you want to do. Don’t push too hard and hurt yourself, however.
  4. Don’t forget to warm up: get your blood flowing before jumping into exercise.
  5. Circuits: decide how many times you want to repeat the exercise.
